The Devil Waltz Anne Stuart 9780778322733 Books

The Devil’s Waltz by Anne Stuart is a romance that offers a bit of a toned down version of the usual variety of heroes that Anne Stuart creates. For someone who pretty much adores the version of anti-heroes as some might label the heroes in Stuart’s books, the toned down version wasn’t any less appealing to me, perhaps because the story still carries the essential elements necessary to draw all sorts of emotions from the reader.

Honorable Miss Annelise Kempton is almost 30 years old and unmarried. Rendered penniless with the death of her father, Annelise moves from one household to another, offering her services for bed and board because to work for a living for someone of her standing was practically frowned upon. Her latest mission so to say lands her in the household of that of Josiah Chippah, a self-made man who wants the marriage of his beautiful daughter to achieve his goal of belonging to elite of the society.

Annelise’s charge is hellbent on marrying Christian Montcalm, the worst of rakes one could come across. Penniless to the point of being destitute, Christian has his sights set on the woman who would bring all the wealth that he requires to put his life back in order, not that he cares much about the sort of thing. The only obstacle in his path seems to be the infuriating woman that is Annelise, a woman who stirs his interest in a way it hasn’t been stirred in a long time, or ever.

Annelise takes her responsibility towards her charge seriously, but the things Christian makes her think of and want to do should not be the thoughts that should run through a woman who has accepted the fact that she would forever be a spinster and that no man, especially a man as beautiful as Christian would want her. With each drugging kiss that Christian lays on her, Annelise’s resolve to stay away from his charming self dissolves at her feet until she is practically laid bare with her naked longing for a man who would never be suitable for a woman like her.

Interwoven into the tale of heat, passion and love between Annelise and Christian lies the story of a nefarious villain who is willing to do everything in his power to get what he wants, even if it is by committing murder in cold blood. The Devil’s Waltz has one of the most beautiful epilogues that I have come across in an Anne Stuart novel. Like it always happens to me in epilogues in Stuart’s books, I had to read and re-read the epilogue until I was satisfied enough to close my eyes and go to sleep, even though it was the wee hours of the morning by then.

The Devil’s Waltz reaffirms my belief that reformed rakes make the best of husbands. And just like the heroes of the caliber that only Stuart can create, Christian had all those essential bits that makes a hero swoon worthy minus the dark edge that seems to be off putting to certain readers of romance. If you have never read an Anne Stuart and would love to read one, I suggest you go with this one. It definitely has the sort of hero that you can get down with, and a heroine you would equally adore. Not to mention the witty banter that is an integral part of the story which made me laugh at several places throughout the read. Recommended!

The Devil Waltz Anne Stuart 9780778322733 Books Reviews

You CANNOT beat Anne Stuart for both contemporary and historical books. She knows how to write and does it very, very well. I have never ever been disappointed in an AS book. All her books are keepers and I will keep reading her. Keep up the good work, AS. Your readers LOVE you!
I like her dark romance times. This one is not as dark, but the brooding hero in the guise of Christian Montcalm, is just so "beautiful" - how he managed his feelings for Annelise, and how Annelise stood up for what she felt was right.
Love it.
I think this is a classic romance novel. The right mix of the relationship with the intrique.
I had this book in "book" form. I bought this one for my . Anne Stuart is one of my top authors - and this book is funny. and endearing. It's a story I will read again and again.

Thank you.
This has to be the best book by Ms. Stuart that I've read so far. Full of romance. Intrigue & excitement! So amazed at Christian's fascination with Anneliese & was happy for Hetty & William to get away from her ruthless & unscrupulous father! Amazing story writer!
Christian Montcalm is a playboy viscount who needs a quick out with a wealthy debutante. Christian is swimming in debt and his card games aren't playing so well anymore. Luckily for him, Josiah Chipple is a man of new money with an eager young bride. Hetty Chipple is beautiful, if a little tedious and rough around the edges. Her father is desperate for a title, and Christian is desperate for money. It seems the perfect match . . . until Miss Annelise Kempton arrives.

Annelise is a ton lady who has fallen on hard times. Her title means she cannot work as a governess, but her dire circumstances mean she needs to offer her valuable services to the wealthy ton in order to get by. And so Annelise, a thirty-year-old over-the-hill spinster, finds herself working for Chipple and trying to marry his young daughter to a respectable title. Hence, Annelise will do anything in her power to keep the rakish Christian Montcalm from getting his claws into Hetty's fortune . . . but while Annelise is busy saving Hetty's impressionable young heart, will she let hers succumb to Christian's double-talking charms?

I read my first Anne Stuart novel last year and was utterly blown away. I have now started exploring her back list, beginning with the 2006 novel `The Devil's Waltz'.

Anne Stuart is infamous for writing unforgiving rakes. That's her trademark in the historical romance genre. Where other authors may write `rake-lite', and have their scoundrel men instantly reformed with the love of a good woman, Stuart commits to writing truly rakish villains. Christian Montcalm is just such a blackguard - he is only interested in Hetty Chipple for her money, though her beauty is a nice boon. He openly admits his devilish plans to Annelise, and is thoroughly delighted by her indignant fluster. And so Christian decides to marry and ruin Hetty (not necessarily in that order) and then pursue her pseudo-governess whom he has nicknamed `dragon'.

Christian is wonderfully scandalous. He is infamous among the ladies of the ton - known for breaking hearts and jumping beds. He is the rakiest of rakes, and completely brilliant. He's so frustratingly villainous while also effortlessly fascinating. Christian had a tragic childhood, linked to the Terror in France. His background is mentioned, but never as an excuse. Christian is just plain selfish - out for instant gratification at whatever cost.

Even when his head is turned by Annelise, he is motivated by purely selfish reasons. He is intrigued by this plain-looking, straight-backed spinster and her inability to be flattered by him. Annelise never backs down and Christian is inflamed by her fight. He decides that once he's married the young Miss Chipple, he will happily pursue Miss Kempton in order to scratch his itch where she is concerned.

Annelise was a wonderful contrast to Christian. Whereas he has always gotten his own way with good looks and charm, Annelise was put `on the shelf' at a young age for being physically unremarkable, overly tall and far too combative. Annelise has resigned herself to spinsterhood - thrust upon her by her drunken father's recklessness - and now all she wants out of life is a little cottage and plenty of cats. Christian is a decadence she must deny herself. Nobody of his beauty or easy charm would ever be interested in her . . . but she can dream.

But just as Annelise is blind-sided by Christian's flirtations, he is likewise shocked to find his infatuation with the dragon growing day by day. They have an explosive and burning attraction, made all the hotter by her disdain and his reluctance.

I love, love, love Anne Stuart. She is queen of the rakes - writing unforgiving, sensuous and evil scoundrels who are also impossibly charming. Christian Montcalm is just such a scoundrel - and when he finds himself falling for the sweetly spinster, Annelise Kempton, he is both astounded and reluctant. `The Devil's Waltz' is a fantastic historical romance from the brilliant Anne Stuart. I will indeed be reading more of her back-list and meeting more of her awfully delicious rakes.
Others have written about the content of the book much better than I ever could, so I don't go into it. I loved all the characters in this book the anti-hero, Christian, to the straight-laced heroine, Annelise to the dastardly villain. Then there was the precocious charge, Hetty, that Annelise was a chaperone for. I could picture them all in my mind. This story kept me interested from start to finish. IMO Anne Stuart is a fine weaver of stories.
