At the beginning of 2016, Steve Spalding -- author of Founder's Saga and creator of the popular podcast Steve Reads Stories -- challenged himself to write one piece of short fiction, every weekday, for a full year. This collection, Cobalt Blue, is the first in a series of books to chronicle that journey.

Inside are twenty original tales, ranging from a contemporary fantasy piece about relationships, gods and the weather ("Partly Cloudy"), to a science fiction short that follows an aging treasure hunter as he searches the galaxy for his lost son ("The Fire and the Black").

After every story, Steve gives insight into his inspiration, the writing process, and the challenges of 2AM editing sessions.

Cobalt Blue is the perfect companion for readers who like their whimsy with a dose of darkness, for anyone looking to have their heart strings plucked at, and for connoisseurs of great fiction the world over.

A Year of Stories Cobalt Blue eBook Steve Spalding

This is the result of work done in January 2016. The tagline on the cover of the book led me to believe that there might exist stories from February …. and on. I have yet to find them. I would read them if I could find them; they are interesting for the wordplay of the stories as well as in the authors “afterthought” self-evaluations.

In his opening notes Spalding notes that he believes himself incapable of writing 365 days in one year; he would probably burn out. He intended to take two days a week off. What follows is one story per weekday in January plus a weekend observation following each Friday. The stories are science fiction, exercises in dialogue, at least one horror story, and lots of reflection on writing. The length of each story generally follows the flash fiction category. There is even one selection titled “Flash Fiction.”

I usually try to pick out a memorable line from each short story when reviewing a collection of short stories (no flash fiction). With flash fiction this is not easy to do because of the terse structure. Picking a line out of context in flash fiction would require a note of explanation that would be the work itself.

I read this selection to see if the writer met goals. I wanted to see if the writing at the end of the month was as fresh as it was at the beginning of the month. I felt it was.

A Year of Stories Cobalt Blue eBook Steve Spalding Reviews

Review originally published at Lomeraniel dot com Audiobookreviews.

This is a compilation of short stories written by Steve Spalding. More than a compilation I would call it a writing exercise, since each story corresponds to a weekday during a couple of months. They are very imaginative and some of them really good, but I think a bit of weeding out should have been done in order to provide a more polished book. Most of the stories are just scenes or sketches without a lot of development, but they are entertaining nonetheless.

What I really enjoyed was James Moors narration. He demonstrated to be a very chameleonic narrator, interpreting a wide range of characters giving them different voices and styles. Moors also provided great character’s interpretations, bringing them to life, and undoubtedly improving the final product. His voice is clear and the audio production was spotless.

I received a copy of this book in audio format from the narrator in exchange for an honest review.
I liked this book.short stories, interesting.i'd love to read the other months as well.
Fast-paced, beautifully constructed stories. The characters come out of nowhere much of the time, make their way through the tales, and when their arc has ended something has transferred in the process. That something intangible hidden within each story. Always surprising, with such variety and scope. And the humour...gives Woody Allen a run for his money! I only wish I could have this is print.
I'm not fond of short pieces but requested this LibraryThing Member GiveAway (thank you for it) as I was fascinated to see what a writer could write in a day every weekday for the first month of a year-long project. It certainly was interesting the stories were different from each other and well written with few typos. I liked the personal Afterthoughts but I didn't like the layout with large paragraph breaks.
